This document is an example of the manumission law that required slave owners to remain responsible for any slave that they set free - more information on this subject can be found at www.jstor.org/pss/4246165. Extract:- 'The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above Ruth Eagan with the approbation of the court, liberated and set free from slavery a negro man slave named Jonas - now of the above bounded Wm. Wilson...executors or administrator or any of them do and shall from time to time and at all times hereafter...discharge and save harmless the...inhabitants of the said county from all costs charges and troubles whatsoever for and by reason of the liberation of the said negro Jonas - and of and from all other suits charges and demands whatsoever touching and concerning the same then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and...' - Sealed and delivered in the presence of Eagan, Wilson, George, etc.
